Job Summary and Qualifications
The primary responsibility of Vice President, Anesthesia Operations ASD includes overseeing anesthesia services within the Ambulatory Surgery Division in collaboration with market VPOs and employed anesthesia services.
Monitor national, regional, market trends in service delivery
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with national vendor leadership and stakeholder organizations
Oversee all anesthesia vendor relationships with facility administrators and medical directors
Critically evaluate current service agreements for cost savings opportunities
Examine facility needs vs. vendor staffing models
Ensure current service meets the needs of physician partners and patient populations
Model and negotiate staffing and service changes to facilitate cost savings/avoidance, service optimization
Ensure current PSA structure clearly defines required services/personnel availability
Ensure current PSA structure avails key service provision/financial data for effective ongoing monitoring
o Evaluate the stability of incumbent vendors
Predict future service or financial disruption
Proactively manage potential service interruption; where indicated initiate preemptive vendor change to ensure seamless facility coverage
Lead anesthesia vendor engagements for new service provision or contractual changes
Source and evaluate vendor options
Lead all Requests for Proposals
Evaluate proformas for modeling accuracy
Negotiate on behalf of ASD for optimal service provision & cost
Ensure any vendor subsidization requests are reasonable, based on sound financial assessment, and fall within Fair Market Value
Engage Division or external legal counsel as required
Collaborate with ASD and enterprise anesthesia operations and ASD leadership to proactively evaluate market anesthesia services strategies
Multi-center bundle PSAs
Diversification of vendors where over-exposed
New service provision evaluation for expansion opportunities
Inter-center service alignment to mitigate anesthesia expense
Critically assess anesthesia employment opportunities
SUPERVISOR: President, HCA Anesthesia Services
SUPERVISES: AVP, Anesthesia Operations ASD
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
Coordinate with enterprise Anesthesia Operations leadership on evaluation of employment options
Coordinate with internal/external counsel to ensure compliance with safe harbor provisions
Align closely with corporate anesthesia resources (PRT & Employed) in monitoring market, state, and national anesthesia trends
Collaborate with VPOs and facility administrators on surgical scheduling excellence for maximal anesthesia cost avoidance
Provide SME to internal stakeholders in the design, negotiation, and implementation of bundled payments for care
Works successfully with all levels of HCA Corporate, Group, Division and Facility leadership, as well as Clinical Services Group (CSG), Physician Services Group (PSG), and HBP leadership to:
Assess and determine best Anesthesia practices regarding quality, operations, and financial performance.
Supports the strategic and operational goals and objectives of HCA and its affiliates.
Leads the identification and implementation of optimal outcomes for anesthesia related engagements.
Provides high quality presentations to all levels of leadership when requested
Uses and develops sophisticated processes and procedures to gather and analyze critical information on the number of provider covered locations, shift requirements, staffing level and productivity assessments, on call requirements for multiple services, revenue cycle analysis, working closely with Facility leadership and providers to develop comprehensive recommendations and requests for proposals, analysis of vendor response comparisons, and recommendations about anesthesia services.
Understands the critical nature of anesthesia services which are vital to the operations of HCA Hospitals and that failure to perform the duties of this position can result in the disruption and delay of vital patient care services.
Serves as lead negotiator on complex agreements involving multiple millions of dollars that directly impacts the financial profitability and operational success of Divisions and Facilities.
Develops and presents detailed staffing and coverage models, carries out complex discussion with physician vendors and negotiates contracts on behalf of Divisions and Facilities.
Works with Division and Facilities as needed on complex implementation plans.
Serves as a key leader and liaison in working with our external fair market valuation (FMV) firms to ensure appropriate and commercially reasonable FMV outcomes.
Serves as an important link during critical transition of vendors to avoid disruption of anesthesia services.
Takes initiative to develop steps and processes in an effort to proactively identify areas of opportunity within the anesthesia space.
Interacts with Physician and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) leadership to ensure practice business needs are met and performance is sustainable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
This position requires the following minimum requirements:
Knowledge of anesthesia operations, hospital operations, organizational policies, procedures, systems and objectives
Knowledge of fiscal management techniques
Knowledge of health care administration systems
Knowledge of governmental regulations and compliance requirements
Ability to use various computer systems and applications
Ability to successfully work within team based and matrixed environments
Ability to plan, organize and supervise
Ability to complete complex engagements on time with desired results
Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment and problem-solving techniques in the decision-making process
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with medical and administrative staff, patients and the public
Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally
Travel: Up to 50%
Preferable for candidate to live in the Nashville, TN metro area, but not required.
EDUCATION:
A Master's Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or Nursing is preferred.
A Bachelor's Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or Nursing is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Five years medical practice - anesthesia.
Ten years' experience in healthcare systems, consultant or operations management at Director level or higher in Anesthesia services.
Effective working knowledge of Anesthesia Operations Management, Physician Compensation and Contracting, Health Systems Management, Hospital Management, Healthcare Financial Management, Practice Management, Revenue Cycle Management, Third-party reimbursement issues, and patient flow.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE :
CRNA preferred.
Clinical knowledge and/or experience preferred.
