    Work with the Engineering staff to support electrical grid reliability and capacity at the customer level. Through practical field experience and mentoring, successful candidate will gain an understanding of the distribution system, technical knowledge, professional confidence, and people skills.

    We are hiring three Electrical Engineering Interns in the Area Engineering team in Electrical Distribution. We are looking for interns to contribute to the distribution system of the northern states of Xcel Energy. This position follows the flexible work program allowing for telecommuting part time during the summer and full time during the school year. Successful candidate will need to live within a commutable distance to any one of the listed office locations during the summer months.

    The successful candidates will be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or a graduate student actively enrolled in school. Seniors graduating Fall 2024 are not eligible for an internship opportunity. Preference will be given to students who can commit to working part-time (8+ hrs/week) during the school year and full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer months. Course work in power systems and an interest in the power industry is desirable.

    Position Summary

    • Work with the Engineering staff to support electrical distribution projects, maintenance, and reliability.

    • Review and analyze distribution system impacts as a result of rooftop solar and community solar gardens.

    • Specify new and replacement equipment, make process improvement recommendations, and support requests from Operations and Maintenance.

    • Investigate customer outages and power quality issues and recommend resolutions

    • Sporadic travel to field work locations and travel to perform power quality and system reliability investigations

    Minimum Requirements

    • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited Electrical Engineering program; in or completed Sophomore level or above

    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

    • Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally

    • Must be self-motivated and work well with others

    • Must live in a commutable distance during the summer at any of the listed locations

    The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.70 to $24.00 per hour
