  • About the Role & Team

    We are looking for a Senior Digital Editor! This role assigns and edits stories for National Geographic's digital audiences while taking a lead contributing role in developing story pitches, refining story framing, and offering subject matter expertise.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develops story pitches that have a proven success rate for driving subscriptions based on reader insights and data. Pitches should originate from the senior digital editor or the roster of freelancers the digital editor has established, and they should always align with the content strategy set by the Director of Digital Content.

    • Assigns stories to freelancers by communicating appropriate story framing, story length, and deadlines. Work with photo editors, graphics editors and video editors, as appropriate, to communicate story details and overall expectations. Building their freelancer base, seeking writers who have expertise in topic areas core to National Geographic, who can write in an engaging way for digital audiences, and who can deliver clean copy on deadline.

    • Edits digital content upon delivery from the assigned freelancer, upholding Nat Geo's editorial standards and agreed upon framing and promotional expectations. Editing should adhere to best digital practices and expectations set by the Director of Digital Content.

    • Works alongside the Digital Executive Editor to identify digital content for cross-platform consideration. Will be part of the digital-to-print workflow and collaborate with editorial colleagues to re-edit content for multiplatform experiences. Be their available to other editorial editors when ideating and assembling project pitches and plans when their expertise lends itself to elevating the execution.

    • Represents National Geographic for internal speaking engagements as well as external media promotional opportunities. Talent contributions may be tied to content amplification across Nat Geo's social media platforms.

    • Monitors industry and competitive landscape, keeping digital trends top of mind. Synthesizes digital readership data on a regular basis while experimenting with publishing tactics to reach new audiences. Prioritizes National Geographic's key performance indicators, which may require adjusting strategies.

    Required Qualifications:

    • 3 plus years of related experience within a digital outlet

    • Professional writing and editing skills, strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills; highly organized; ability to manage resources and daily priorities

    • Team player with diplomatic temperament and ability to foster a cooperative work environment

    • Ability to manage multiple projects and consistently deliver quality work in a fast-paced environment; deep familiarity with and appreciation for digital publishing

    • Proficiency in Microsoft's product suite, Adobe Analytics, and HTML preferred

    Required Education:

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent
