    Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA), Algorithms, Modeling, and Assessments Division (AMA) in Raleigh, NC is seeking a staff engineer/scientist for a position developing and improving a weapon effects software architecture for advanced physics-based software development and making quality production software at all stages of the software lifecycle.

    What you'll do as a Mid-Level Engineer:

    • Support the development of our system, including:

    • Integration of M&S physics-based weapon effects software models into an established Java framework.

    • Data processing including post-processing and documentation of model results.

    • Verification and validation.

    • Working with Agile teams.

    • Working directly with our customers, other contractors, and other ARA teams to cross-integrate capabilities.

    • Working on data visualization and verification, including writing reports; This may include visualization of data.

    • Candidate will need to be able to understand the effects being modeled and validated.

    • Candidate will need to be able to execute simulations and document results.

    Due to the work, you'll perform, you must be a US citizen and eligible to apply for and hold a US security clearance (selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements at the time of employment)

    Qualifications:

    • Master's Degree with 3-5 years of related work experience (Preferably PhD with 0-2 years of work experience) in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil), Physics, or similar - but not computer science / programming.

    • US citizenship required.

    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret DoD security clearance.

    • No foreign nationals, no candidates who have had recent bankruptcies or debt in collections, no candidates with family, spouse, or spouses' family who are unwilling to partake in the security clearance process, etc.

    • Primarily programming in Java.

    • Some experience with Java required.

    • Engineers in this role typically grow to lead teams and present to customers, but the candidate still must be able to handle the day-to-day work of integrating software and writing code.

    • Experience working with, or developing, algorithms and physics-based models.

    • Ability to communicate (oral, in writing, and in presentation form) is critical in this position.

    • Candidate will need to be local to the Raleigh area.

    • Candidate will need to be on-site initially through onboarding and is able to transition to more work from home with demonstrated high productivity, task understanding, and proficiency with the code base.

    Preferred

    • PhD with 0-2 years of experience.

    • Someone with any knowledge of Fortran.

    • Someone with any experience with developments tools like Git, Eclipse (or IntelliJ), Visual Studio, JIRA.

    • Someone with any experience with compiling and developing for or on Linux OS.

    • Most of the work can be done on Windows, but cannot escape eventually having to work with Linux.

    Desired:

    • Some C++ experience is highly desired but not required.

    • Current active security clearance.

    • Experience with related DoD software systems and models.

    • Experience developing and deploying software to DoD IA requirements.

    • Knowledge of nuclear weapons effects and a background of scientific programming.

    • Experience with automated testing, both in your development workflow and through CI/CD.
