Navy Nursing Career Offers Many Benefits

Posted by

If you want to pursue a nursing career and serve your country, you can do both by becoming a Navy Nurse. You’ll work with physicians and other members of the Navy’s healthcare team to deliver high-quality care to Sailors and Marines as well as their eligible family members.

You can specialize in everything from General Nursing and Critical Care to such Medical/Surgical fields as Nurse Anesthetist and Nurse Practitioner. You could be assigned to work at a Naval base, a National Naval Medical Center, hospital ship or mobile clinic.

Besides performing traditional civilian nurses' duties, you’ll take part in disaster relief and humanitarian outreach efforts, work without the usual business profit concerns, and have manageable patient ratios. You’ll also gain valuable management experience and earn the respect afforded a Nurse Officer.

There's competitive pay and benefits as well. This includes tax-free allowances for housing and meals, comprehensive medical/dental coverage, retirement benefits, annual 30 days vacation with pay, and low-cost travel opportunities. You’ll sharpen your skills via hands-on experience and training. If you apply as a student, you’ll have access to paid training and access to Navy-funded continuing education programs (keep in mind that your service does not begin until after you complete your education).

If you’re interested in becoming a Navy Nurse, you must be a U.S. citizen, hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) that's accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). You should also have a license to practice in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory.
