Finding Better Ways To Stand Out From The Pack

Posted by

For many job seekers, applying for job after job and not getting so much as a phone call can be very frustrating. There are still people who don't think that customizing their resumes or writing cover letters is worth the time and effort. If you're one of those people, there may be several things that are causing you to miss opportunities.

In this job market, it's important to find ways to stand out. Your goal is to make sure that each company you send a resume to feels like they are the only company you want to work for. Here are some things that you can do to help yourself stand out:

  1. Read the job description carefully - even if it looks like they want someone who doesn't exist, and there's no way anyone has all of the skills that they're looking for, take them at their word. If you don't meet the requirements they specify, you're probably not going to even be considered. Sending applications to jobs that you aren't qualified for is a waste of your time and theirs. If you truly want the job, and feel that you have most of the qualities they are looking for, send them your resume but make sure you explain why you think you would be a good fit in your cover letter.
  2. Be sure to proofread - accuracy is important. Remember that your resume is your first impression. If spelling isn't important during the application during the application process, an employer can't help but ask themselves if you are someone who pays attention to details. Your resume should be flawless. A good tip for proofreading more effectively is to proofread your document backwards. Starting with the last word, work your way up the document. This will prevent your eyes from skipping over short or common words.
  3. Cover letters are important - a cover letter is your chance to make your sales pitch. Your cover letter lets you tell them why you're the perfect fit for the job, while your resume will serve to back up the points you made in the letter.
  4. Give it personal attention - always customize your cover letter and your resume to the job you're trying to apply for. Employers can spot a form letter. If you're like me, it doesn't feel good to receive a form letter from a company. It's the same for the hiring manager. Show them that you care about the job and their company.

Making yourself stand out during the application process is a challenge. But, it's the key to landing the job you want and letting them know how amazing you are.
